Is Trance The Modern Equivalent Of Classical MusicMusic, like language, is constantly evolving.  Utilizing new instruments, new techniques, and new artistic direction, there are a variety of distinct musical styles that are all growing and changing seemingly independently of one another.  Across the spectrum of music, two styles that appear to be on opposite ends are trance and classical music.  With one seen as relatively static and the other constantly splitting into sub-genres, both have very different sounds. That is, until you listen closer.

Let’s take a moment to more carefully examine trance music and the similarities it shares with classical music. Defining particular styles of each, we will take a closer look at the instrument selection and how it affects composition, as well as the nature and purpose of the music as it relates to our experience of the sounds.  Is trance the modern equivalent of classical music?  Let’s find out.

What Styles of Trance and Classical Will We Compare?

Trance is multi-varied. Just as rock music falls into a number of different categories and exists as a creation of an earlier kind of music, so too is trance.  When comparing trance to classical music, let’s look at the sub-genre of trance known as epic, melodic, and uplifting.  As for classical, we will compare these forms of trance with music traditionally assumed to be classical, including works from many of the great composers.

A Look At Instrument Selection

Both trance and classical music incorporate a large selection of different musical instruments to create a harmonious and unifying sound. Trance does this through majority digitally produced noises while classical music uses instruments.  Despite this difference, the end result of each is strikingly similar. In addition, there are noted examples of trance instruments and classical instruments intermingling in experimental forms with pleasing results.

The Nature Of The Sound

What emotions does classical music elicit?  What are your personal experiences when you hear this music being played?  While the performance of the music may change, most typically build up from component parts.  Over time additional elements are added, new instruments take center stage, and the song comes together.  The result on our psychology can be described as transcendence, where the music is responsible for lifting our mood, playing with our emotion, and transporting our thoughts to places we may not have ordinarily gone. Trance music operates in a similar way. Taking basic notes and adding over time, the same uplifting and transitional experience occurs.  In either case, the nature of the sound and music unifies mind and spirit, bringing one in better touch of oneself.

So, Is Trance The Modern Equivalent of Classical Music Or Not?

While the two styles of music are not directly linked, the argument can be made that trance is a kind of spiritual successor, utilizing new instruments and technology to create an experience akin to classical works.  That being said, classical music has by no means ended or hit its hay day in terms of quality.  Both will continue to grow and expand on their own into the future.  In time, they may be even more closely linked than they are now.

Interestingly, those same “clouded mind” feelings came back after they’d stopped listening to classical music before they fell asleep.

A study presented by the Journal for Advanced Nursing in England showed that doctors were able to reduce the amount of opiates given to individuals that had just recently had stomach surgery after they prescribed a heavy dosage of classical music before they went to bed.

This study has been repeated numerous times all over the world with the same kinds of results, leading doctors and researchers to conclude that there are real healing benefits provided by the soothing sounds of classical music.

Boost your emotional intelligence and empathy with classical music before bed

In 2001, researchers at the Southern Methodist University in the United States began a 10 year long research project to better understand the impact that classical music had on heightening of emotional power, empathy, and emotional intelligence in those that listened for at least 45 minutes before bed.

The research results were incredible, showing that those that took the time to listen to 45 minutes worth of classical music right before bed not only registered as being more empathetic, more emotionally into with society, and demonstrating higher emotional intelligence, but that they were also able to handle stress, pressure, and anxiety much better than the general population.

Obviously, the benefits are certainly there for those willing to listen to a bit of classical before they head off to meet Mr. Sandman – and because it is so easy to get started, you’d have to be at least a little bit crazy not to give it a shot!
