Stravinsky Firebird (1945)
Mussorgsky completed St. John's Night on the Bare Mountain on St. John's Eve (23rd June) in 1867. It was never performed in his lifetime and Rimsky-Korsakov re-worked it for it's first performance, but the original presents a more raw and frightenng sound.
Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto is dedicated to physician Nikolai Dahl who helped him out of clinical depression following the critics mauling of his 1st Symphony. 110 years after it's first complete performance it is top of Classic FM's annual Hall of Fame.

Stravinsky's 1945 reworking of the Firebird suite contains more of the original music than the previous versions. Music from the Firebird has been used in many genres since the ballet opened 101 years ago, including opening live concerts from the rock group Yes.
