Salomon Past Concerts

Tuesday 15th March 2011 at St John's Smith Square

Conductor Robin O'Neill

Clarinet Michael Collins

'...the Salomon Orchestra gave very committed performances, particularly enjoying the freedom Corigliano gives them, and brought all the music vividly to life.' Bob Briggs, classicalsource.com

Gabrieli arr. Stokowski Sonata pian' e forte

Corigliano Clarinet Concerto

Copland Symphony No.3

Aaron Copland and Lenoard Bernstein

Copland, probably the most respected of America's composers, said of John Corigliano: 'One of the most talented composers on the scene today - the real thing. His music is individual, imaginitive, expertly crafted, and aurally quite stunning.' Leonard Bernstein conducted the New York Philharmonic for the premiere of the Clarinet Concerto in 1977. The movements are entitled Cadenzas, Elegy (an extended dialogue for Clarinet and solo violin in memory of John Corigliano Senior, concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic for 23 years), and Antiphonal Toccata which takes spatial ideas and quotes from Gabrieli's Sonata pian' e forte.
