Salomon Past Concerts

Tuesday 9th March 2010 at St John's Smith Square

Conductor Nicholas Collon

'What followed was rightly magical; music of resignation, performed with love and tenderness, the ending beautiful and content... This was a fine performance and interpretation with superb playing from all sections of the orchestra...Without doubt, this was a concert to remember.' Bob Briggs, classicalsource.com

Mahler (Cooke) Symphony No.10

As he had feared Mahler died before finishing his 10th symphony. However he had written the leading thematic line throughout and 90 per cent of the counterpoint and harmony as well as draft orchestrations of the first two movements. Deryck Cooke, who created the definitive performing version, wrote:

'This is not the music of death, but - as is confirmed by Mahler's avowal of devotion to his wife written over the last bars - of love. There was still plenty of life left in Mahler when death claimed him: the Tenth Symphony reveals that the Ninth had been a phase, like the Sixth, which he had faced and overcome.'

Salomon performed the (almost) completed opening Adagio of Mahler's 10th in 1975 conducted by Simon Rattle, who also conducted the 6th in 1979. The full 10th completes Salomon's entire cycle of his symphonies.
