Salomon Past Concerts Tuesday 20th October 2009 at St John's Smith Square Conductor Philip Ellis 'As ever, Salomon delivered a memorable concert with some powerful playing of some strong music.' Planet Hugill John McCabe
'Certainly the piece made a vivid impression on this occasion, the occasional rough-edges being far outweighed by the energy and sheer sense of drama that the Salomon Orchestra produced in response to Philip Ellis's incisive direction.' Richard Whitehouse, classicalsource.com '...it is puzzling why the work had to wait till now for its first public performance. Salomon's account of the work was compelling and dramatic.' Planet Hugill John McCabe's Edward II originated as a commission by Stuttgart Ballet and follows the relationships dramatised in Christopher Marlowe's 1592 play (quotations from the play will be projected beofre and after the performance). It was an immediate success receiving a 15-minute standing ovation on its first night. The ballet was conceived as an epic symphonic work so a symphony using material from the ballet was a natural step. 'The commissioned score by John McCabe surges turbulently with rich orchestration - even taking in an electric guitar - and rises to all the dramatic high spots.' David Dougill The Sunday Times 19 October 1997 Reviews of the ballet can be found on John McCabe's website. John McCabe's programme notes for the symphony can be found on Chester Novello's website. The symphony is in 4 movements: 1.
Adagio-Allegro, poco pesante- Molto pesante- Moderato- Allegro vivo
Sergei Prokofieff
Romeo & Juliet 'A telling juxtaposition saw the second half devoted to Prokofiev's music for the ballet of Romeo and Juliet...this abridgement deserves to find favour in concert halls the world over' Richard Whitehouse, classicalsource.com Romeo & Juliet is one of the pinnacles of C20th music. The well known Suites from the ballet do not do justice to the richness and variety of the music. Our concert scenario follows the story with quotations from Shakespeare's play projected throughout one hour of the finest music. Romeo and Juliet concert scenario scenes: Act 1: Introduction - Morning Dance - Quarrel - Duke's Command - Interlude - Juliet the girl - Masks - Dance of the Knights - Balcony Scene - Love Duet Act 2: Mandolin Dance - Tybalt fights Mercutio - Romeo Avanges Mercutio's Death - Death of Tybalt Act 3: Romeo bids Juliet farewell - Juliet refuses to marry Paris - Juliet Alone - Interlude - At Friar Lawrence's Cell - Juliet Alone - Dance of the Girls with Lilies Act 4: Juliet's Funeral - Juliet's Death
