Salomon past concerts: Tuesday 10th February 2004 St John's Smith Square, SW1 Conductor Malcolm Binney Flute Julian Sperry
View/print out a leaflet for this concert Cockaigne is Elgar's idealised picture of Edwardian London, with the moods encompassing lovers in a secluded park and the excitement of a passing brass band. Nielsen's Flute Concerto was written for Holger Gilbert Jespersen of the Copenhagen Wind Quintet. The music for the flute is genteel, and is contrasted with a buffoonish trombone. Brahms composed his Fourth Symphony in Mürzzuschlag in Austria in 1884-5. The first performance was in Meiningen, and the orchestra was impressed enough to immediately take it on tour. Brahms was known for making romantic works in the classical form, but the finale of the symphony, a passacaglia based on a Bach chaconne but with the romantic introduction of a chromatic note in the theme, was progressive and influential.
